Casa Zuccari

Sala terrena

The fresco decoration in the former ballroom on the ground floor, known as the sala terrena, is closely connected with the artistic and social self-image of Federico Zuccari and presumably with the critical acclaim of his frescoes in the dome of the Cathedral of Florence, which were unveiled in 1579. In the overall context of the fresco decorations, with the portrayal of time in the ceiling fresco, the scenes from Aesop’s Fables in the arches and the self-portrait in a domestic setting in the lunettes, the painter makes reference to the potential of the period, which would later reveal the true brilliance of his painting.
