Romualdo Moscioni. Apulia Monumentale

The Palatine Basilicas

The imposing structures of Santa Maria Assunta in Altamura, Sant’Eustachio in Acquaviva delle Fonti, San Nicola in Bari and San Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant’Angelo constitute Apulia’s four Palatine Basilicas (Reali Basiliche Palatine). These high medieval churches were all built between the 11th and 12th century and were exempt from papal jurisdiction, being linked instead in different ways to the Norman ruling house. They formed their own group, too, within the classification system by which Apulia’s monuments were recorded. The Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione had initially intended the photographic documentation of Apulia to start with the Palatine Basilicas. When the official commission was issued to Moscioni on 27 November 1891, he was already in Apulia and had started work, probably in order to make the most of the advantageous lighting conditions offered by the winter months. By the following January he was able to deliver a first set of 40 prints to the authorities. These did not yet contain any photographs of the Palatine Basilicas, but instead documented monuments from Matera, Bitonto, Ruve, Castel del Monte and Benevento. The campaign had rapidly expanded, in other words, in terms of its subjects and motifs. Overall, however, a good fifth of Moscioni’s altogether 235 large-format photographs from Apulia are devoted to the four basilicas, with 22 pictures of Bari, 21 of Altamura, three of Acquaviva delle Fonti and just two of Monte Sant’Angelo.
