THE MÉTIERS OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER Roberto Sigismondi

Social Commitment

Roberto Sigismondi’s photographs also reflect his social commitment. In 2006 he and his wife, Francesca, went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to work as volunteers in the Kimbondo orphanage and pediatric hospital on the outskirts of Kinshasa. The pictures he took there were exhibited in Rome in May 2006 and the following year were used to illustrate the calendar published by the humanitarian aid NGO “Agapé Onlus” and entitled “Missione possibile – Kimbondo, Immagini dal Congo”.
During a 1999 trip to Brazil, he photograph street kids (“Meninos de Rua”) at Miguel Couto, a neighborhood of Nova Iguaçu (near Rio de Janeiro). He gifted a copy of the photo books with original prints to Pope John Paul II.
On commission from the magazine Arancia Blu in 1989, he photographed the lives of the Roma camped at Via di Tor Bella Monaca in Rome. In an interview, he explained that to shoot those pictures he had to rely mainly on empathy: “For me photography is always a tool of knowledge and documentation (…) but a photo can also tell the story of a life reading it in a person’s face.”
